The Phuket Vegetarian Festival is a religious holiday celebrated by Thais of Chinese descent living in the city of Phuket.
The origin of the festival dates back to 1825. China opera company that was in the city fell seriously ill, probably of malaria. Well, it is said that the company was miraculously cured after following an exclusively vegetarian diet in honor oftwo gods, Kiew Ong Tai Chinese emperors and Yok Ong Sone Teh Teh.
Since then, devotees of the area held the first evening of the ninth lunar month certain religious ceremonies in honor of these gods.
Among many other acts, highlighted dramatically the processions in which young people are drilled parts of the body with all sorts of items, from swords and knives, until such strange objects like guns, or pruning shears pineapples. Devotees show so they are immune to pain to be owned by one of their revered gods.
